Course description:
Reflection on conspiratorial thinking has become a common component of public discourse in modern society, thus moving beyond the confines of purely academic inquiry into the sphere of everyday social practice. This micro-certificate focuses on how to identify, understand, and critically analyse conspiracy theories. It addresses conspiratorial thinking as a phenomenon that operates within contemporary democratic societies and influences citizens? decision-making processes. The course introduces participants to both an empirical perspective?namely, the descriptive dimension of these phenomena?and an internal dimension, encompassing the psychological mechanisms at work as well as the social aspects of their impact. At the same time, the course adopts a historical perspective, as the study of conspiracy theories across time reveals important long-term patterns and mechanisms associated with their emergence, dissemination, and effects. The historical operation and impact of conspiracy theories, of course, extend beyond democratic societies alone.
