Course description:

The Lifelong Learning Programme in Lactation Counselling is designed as both theoretical and practical. It provides participants with basic knowledge and skills in the development and support of breastfeeding. Participants of the programme will be able to offer primarily practical assistance.

Course content:

Seminar Topics
1. The importance of breastfeeding. The significance of breastfeeding for the physical and psychological health of the child and the mother. Preparation for breastfeeding.
2. The importance of skin to skin contact after birth and later on. Self attachment. Consequences of separation.
3. The beginnings of breastfeeding in the first days after birth. Prevention of breastfeeding problems.
4. Recommended practices related to breastfeeding support. Factors influencing breastfeeding. Breastfeeding ergonomics.
5. Breastfeeding positions, latching, signs of effective milk transfer and assessing breastfeeding adequacy. Solving breastfeeding difficulties. Options for increasing breast milk intake and methods of supplementation.
6. The impact of formula advertising on breastfeeding success. Preparing pregnant women for breastfeeding.
