Course description:
The course introduces the fundamental concepts of quantum computing without assuming any prior knowledge of quantum physics. The introduction to quantum theory from a computer science perspective begins with an explanation of the essential concepts required for the construction of quantum algorithms. This is followed by demonstrations of several elementary examples of quantum speedup and basic applications, such as Deutsch's algorithm, Grover's search algorithm, and Shor's factorization algorithm with its cryptographic application. Attention is also given to hybrid approaches based on variational quantum circuits, such as VQE and QAOA, as well as to quantum machine learning methods. The final part of the course is devoted to quantum error correction. The theoretical lectures are complemented by practical exercises in which quantum algorithms are analyzed in detail using methods of functional analysis and demonstrated on a quantum computer simulator or on real quantum hardware. The Qiskit IDE and the online tool Quirk are used for building the quantum algorithms.
