The study programme has three specializations: Industrial Design – Studio of Industrial Design, Studio of Furniture and Interior Design, Studio of Product Design Material Design – Studios of Glass, Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain, Studio K.O.V., Studio of Textile Fashion Design – Studios of Fashion Design, Studio of Fashion and Footwear Design Industrial Design prepares you for serial and industrial production with a wide range of materials and modern technologies, unique craft-based and conceptual objects, and broader systems and services design. Material Design focuses on systematic analysis of individual materials and technological, conceptual and experimental approaches in a wide range of forms and objects. It covers unique craft-based and conceptual objects and products for industrial and serial production. Fashion Design focuses on the human body and its appearance, especially, but not only, through the design, production and manufacture of clothing, fashion accessories, leather goods, footwear and related products. It covers ready-to-wear and industrial production and unique author-driven works conceived conceptually or experimentally, with links to free artistic practice.
For UMPRUM’s master’s degree program in English, apply electronically by March 31st. Upload pdf copies of: 1) a CV with relevant professional history; 2) a letter of intent, at least 1 page in English; 3) a portfolio of your own work related to the selected area of studies, at least 10 examples; 4) a recommendation letter; 5) your BA diploma and Diploma Supplement/Transcript of Records translated into English, or confirmation of university studies if you are in the final year of your undergraduate program; 6) proof of English with a language certificate: minimum B2 (CEFR) / 6.0 (IELTS), FCE (CE), TOEFL 50, IELTS (5.0). First-round results should be known by April 22 at the latest. The second round is an online interview and usually takes place between April 22 and May 12.
With a design degree from UMPRUM, you can work as: • independent designers or members of small design teams, undertaking commissions from industrial enterprises and other companies, including the development of industrial designs for serial production; • independent designers or members of small design teams specializing in traditional craft production of unique objects and small series, as well as bespoke production for individual clients; • designers employed in the design departments of industrial enterprises; • independent consultants specializing in design strategy and management; • consultants employed by agencies providing strategic and management consulting services with a focus on design; • design advisors in the public sector; • academic professionals and researchers in the field of design.
High competition for places keeps student numbers low, supporting an individual approach across studios and study programmes. Learn from renowned professors, leading authorities and international guest professors invited each semester through the Visiting Artist Studio. Each field offers specialised above-standard workshops and a wide range of theoretical classes. You can use two gallery spaces in central Prague and a historic library with a vast collection of publications in multiple languages. Students work with Czech and international manufacturers including Škoda Auto, Volkswagen, Nike, Mikov, Bomma, Preciosa, Vitra, Hermés, Baťa and Moser Glassworks. They regularly join prestigious international exhibitions and design fairs. These include Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Ars Electronica Festival, Brussels Design September and Dutch Design Week. UMPRUM has bilateral agreements with more than 60 European and non-European partner schools. It is a member of CUMULUS – the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media. It belongs to ELIA, a globally connected European network supporting exchange and development in higher arts education.
