The study programme is divided into four specializations: Typography and Illustration – Studio of lllustration and Graphics, Study of Type Design and Typography Graphic Design – Studio of Graphic Design and Visual Communication, Studio of Graphic Design and New Media, Studio of Design and Digital Technology Animation and Film – Studio of Animation and Film Photography – Studio of Photography II Typography and Illustration prepares you for independent or team work in a graphic design studio, editorial office or agency, with field knowledge and the necessary technological skills. You develop traditional graphic and typographic practice, a wide range of graphic and reproduction techniques, and judgement about when to use them. Precise craftsmanship is central, while semester projects also support individual artistic experimentation. Graphic Design develops graphic-design principles, understanding of the discipline’s multiple areas of expertise and selection of forms and tools to achieve a given objective. It also provides a more open speculative field for exploring relations and shifts between old and new media and emerging technological and media realities. At the same time, it prepares you to think about broader systems and services design. Animation and Film prepares you for independent or team work in audiovisual production, with emphasis on the visual and artistic aspects of the work and its temporal dimension. Photography prepares you for independent creative work and collaboration with graphic design studios. It explores image communication in design, fashion and art, with a main focus on applied photographic practice.
Apply to only one studio using the electronic form on the UMPRUM website (www.umprum.cz/cs/web/uchazec/navazujici-magisterske-studium/umeni). Entry requirements: completion of a Bachelor´s or a Master´s degree programme; at the entrance examination you may be a final-year student; Czech at B1 level if you are not a citizen of the Czech Republic or the Slovak Republic; interest in the relevant field. Attach a motivation letter, CV, a copy of your university degree certificate or written confirmation from your university that you are in the final year of higher education, a copy of a B1 Czech certificate if you are not a citizen of the Czech Republic or the Slovak Republic, and a digital portfolio.
With a graphic design degree from UMPRUM, you can work as: • independent designers or designers working in teams, undertaking commissions from companies and other organizations; • independent designers or designers working in teams, undertaking commissions from individual clients; • independent designers or designers working in teams, focusing on unique, author-driven creative work; • employees in the field of graphic design and visual communication; • graphic design and visual communication advisors in the public sector; • academic professionals in the field of graphic design and visual communication.
High competition for places keeps student numbers low, supporting an individual approach across studios and study programmes. Learn from renowned professors, leading authorities and international guest professors invited each semester through the Visiting Artist Studio. Each field offers specialised above-standard workshops and a wide range of theoretical classes. You can use two gallery spaces in central Prague and a historic library with a vast collection of publications in multiple languages. Students work with Czech and international manufacturers including Škoda Auto, Volkswagen, Nike, Mikov, Bomma, Preciosa, Vitra, Hermés, Baťa and Moser Glassworks. They regularly join prestigious international exhibitions and design fairs. These include Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Ars Electronica Festival, Brussels Design September and Dutch Design Week. UMPRUM has bilateral agreements with more than 60 European and non-European partner schools. It is a member of CUMULUS – the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media. It belongs to ELIA, a globally connected European network supporting exchange and development in higher arts education.
