Academy of Arts Architecture & Design in Prague
The Department of Fine Arts comprises five independent studios with distinct media orientations, yet works as an interconnected and permeable whole. It shares lectures, workshops, excursions and a semester programme with visiting international artists. The studios build on sculpture, installation, public space and the exhibition as a medium, environmental art, painting, drawing, moving image and digital image, performance, text and sound. They also prepare you for professional life across visual art, including systems of art support and funding, the precarisation of labour and the ethics of art funding. Teaching emphasises interdisciplinarity, reflection on artistic practice and critical thinking in artistic, social and civic, historical and ecological contexts. A recurring theme is lived reality amid multiple crises and how individuals and society can respond through art, with attention to imagination and empathy as distinctive qualities of artistic practice that distinguish the field from others. The Centre for Art and Ecology – Kafkárna, established by the VU1 studio, uses a contemporary-art perspective to offer a programme and facilities to the whole university and the public. You learn to solve artistic problems creatively and develop the concept, content, form and contextualisation of your work, including theoretical and critical reflection and public presentation. You gain knowledge of art history, theory and philosophy; craft skills and technological processes and learn to apply them in your own work; terminology, fundamental methods and approaches; ways to find and interpret information and inspiration relevant to creatively developing a chosen subject; and orientation in the current exhibition and gallery landscape. Basic presentation and communication skills are also part of the programme.
Apply to only one studio using the electronic form on the UMPRUM website (www.umprum.cz/cs/web/uchazec/navazujici-magisterske-studium/umeni). With a fine art degree from UMPRUM, you can work as: • freelance visual artists; • members of creative teams in the cultural and commercial sectors and in the creative industries; • employees of galleries or a museums; • visual arts advisors in the public sector; • academic professionals in the field of visual arts within higher education; • professional practitioners in the applied arts and crafts, depending on the media specialization of their studio or elective courses they have completed (e.g. restoration, the film industry, documentary or photojournalism, graphic design, coordination or production of art projects, etc.).
High competition for places keeps student numbers low, supporting an individual approach across studios and study programmes. Learn from renowned professors, leading authorities and international guest professors invited each semester through the Visiting Artist Studio. Each field offers specialised above-standard workshops and a wide range of theoretical classes. You can use two gallery spaces in central Prague and a historic library with a vast collection of publications in multiple languages. Students work with Czech and international manufacturers including Škoda Auto, Volkswagen, Nike, Mikov, Bomma, Preciosa, Vitra, Hermés, Baťa and Moser Glassworks. They regularly join prestigious international exhibitions and design fairs. These include Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Ars Electronica Festival, Brussels Design September and Dutch Design Week. UMPRUM has bilateral agreements with more than 60 European and non-European partner schools. It is a member of CUMULUS – the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media.
