This study programme is designed for those who wish to pursue a career as a secondary-school mathematics teacher. It provides students with a solid foundation in key mathematical disciplines, subject-specific didactics, pedagogy, and psychology. This combination offers high-quality preparation for the follow-up Master’s programme in Mathematics Education. The environment of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen naturally connects mathematics instruction with other technical and natural-science fields, in line with the principles of modern STEM education.The programme is part of a so-called joint (combined) study. Applicants choose two study programmes: a major and a minor. In cooperation with the Faculty of Education, Mathematics can be combined with Physics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Geography. During their studies, you will acquire the fundamentals of mathematical analysis, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, geometry, numerical mathematics, mathematical modelling, probability, and statistics. The programme also includes coursework in subject-specific didactics and pedagogical-psychological disciplines. Students get acquainted with modern educational approaches, teaching concepts, principles of learning processes, and the specifics of educating pupils with special educational needs. Emphasis is also placed on evaluating teaching quality and on the basics of communicating scientific knowledge. Graduates of the programme gain the knowledge and competencies required to continue in follow-up Master’s teaching programmes. In particular, they may continue in the Master’s programmes Teaching of mathematics for secondary schools or Lower secondary school teacher training in mathematics at UWB. Graduates may also apply for similar programmes at other universities.
